What to Do

WEDDING GUEST GUIDE TO MEXICO

(Please read before traveling)

We are so excited to welcome you to Mexico 🤍
For many of you, this will be your first time here.

Mexico is vibrant, emotional, colorful, delicious and full of life.
It is also different from Europe — and that’s part of the beauty.

This guide will help you feel comfortable, safe and prepared.

MEXICO CITY (CDMX)

Mexico City is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world — around 23 million people.

It is modern, cosmopolitan, cultural and surprisingly green. You will be coming during purple sakura blooming (Jacarandas)

You are super lucky because it’s just a few weeks a year!

Let’s be clear:

Mexico City is safer than the majority of European capitals.
But like any major global city — general awareness is required.

No fear. Just common sense.

Transportation in Mexico City

Public transport exists, but Uber is the easiest option for visitors.

AIRPORT TRANSPORT

From Mexico City airport:

  • Use Uber or DiDi only.

  • You may also use official airport taxi counters.

  • Do NOT take taxis from the street (especially not the pink ones).

  • Do NOT accept rides from random drivers inside or outside the airport.

CROSSING THE STREET

Traffic can be unpredictable.

Even if the pedestrian light is green:

  • Always look both ways.

  • Make eye contact with drivers.

  • Do not assume cars will automatically stop.

Be attentive when crossing roads.

Walking & Exploring

You can walk across a huge and beautiful part of the city — from Prado Norte (Lomas area) all the way to San Ángel.

That is nearly a 6-hour walk through connected, vibrant neighborhoods — larger than many European capitals.

You can walk, cycle, explore freely.

Along the way you’ll find:

  • Parks

  • Galleries

  • Historic architecture

  • Cafés

  • Museums

  • Cultural spaces

For example:

  • Bosque de Chapultepec

  • Museo Nacional de Antropología

  • Palacio de Bellas Artes

  • Castillo de Chapultepec

There are hundreds of parks, galleries and museums to visit.

If you are unsure about planning your tourist days — please ask us.
We are happy to help you design your Mexico experience.

Altitude Awareness

Mexico City sits at 2,240 meters (7,350 ft) above sea level.

You may experience during the first 1–2 days:

  • Mild headache

  • Fatigue

  • Slight dizziness

  • Faster heartbeat

  • Alcohol affecting you faster

This is normal.

What helps:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Don’t overdrink alcohol on your first day

  • Rest well

  • Walk slower at the beginning

  • Electrolytes are helpful

Your body just needs a little time to adjust.

Food & “Moctezuma’s Revenge”

Many travelers experience what is jokingly called “Moctezuma’s Revenge” — mild traveler’s stomach upset caused by unfamiliar bacteria or food changes.

It is usually not serious — but it can disrupt 24–48 hours.

To avoid it:

✔ Avoid random street food, especially during your first days
✔ Eat in busy, clean-looking places
✔ Avoid tap water
✔ Be cautious with ice from very small vendors
✔ Wash hands frequently

In good restaurants and tourist areas, food standards are high.

If it happens:

  • Hydrate

  • Use electrolytes

  • Activated charcoal can help

  • Pharmacies are easily available

Almost every foreigner survives this small initiation ceremony.

General Safety (Mexico City)

  • No need to bring expensive designer items.

  • Avoid displaying luxury watches or large amounts of cash.

  • Do not walk alone in empty streets late at night.

  • Keep a digital copy of your passport.

  • Use normal big-city awareness.

  • You can pay credit card or apple/google pay everywhere. We literally live without cash

  • But please take cash to TEPOZTLAN & TULUM they dont like cards there!

CASH

  • In Mexico City (CDMX), cards are widely accepted. You only need a small amount of cash.

  • In Tepoztlán and Tulum, you will need cash, especially for small restaurants, markets and taxis.

  • Withdraw moderate amounts from ATMs inside the airport or banks. Do not carry large sums.

If you behave the same way you would in Paris, Berlin or London — you will be perfectly fine.

SIM CARD & INTERNET

  • There is free Wi-Fi at Mexico City airport immediately after landing.

  • Many public areas in Mexico City offer free public Wi-Fi (“CDMX Internet para Todos”).

  • We recommend buying a Mexican SIM card at the airport (Telcel has the best coverage). It’s inexpensive and makes Uber, maps and communication much easier.

MOSQUITOES (Late February – Early March)

  • Mexico City: almost no issue.

  • Tepoztlán: light presence in the evenings.

  • Tulum: mosquitoes are common, especially near jungle and water.

Please bring mosquito repellent and something light with long sleeves for evenings in Tulum.

TEPOZTLÁN (Wedding Location)

Tepoztlán is a beautiful mountain town about 2 hours from Mexico City.

It is small, charming, very touristic and generally very safe.

You can comfortably walk around town.

✔ Taxis are safe here.
✔ No special security concerns.
✔ Just basic common sense at night.

Things to enjoy:

  • Hiking to El Tepozteco

  • Local markets

  • Mountain views

  • Relaxed atmosphere

TULUM

Tulum is a beach and jungle destination — very international and touristic.

✔ Taxis are safe here.
✔ Biking is common.
✔ Beach clubs and restaurants are well established.

Visit:

  • Tulum Archaeological Zone

  • Cenotes

  • Caribbean beaches

Just avoid leaving belongings unattended and avoid risky behavior.

Wedding Transportation

Your transport from Mexico City to Tepoztlán and back is included in your invitation.

  • Approximate travel time: 2 hours by bus

  • Comfortable and organized

  • You do not need to arrange anything yourself

We will share departure details in advance.
Please be punctual.

Practical Tips for All Mexico

  • Do not drink tap water

  • Use sunscreen daily

  • Tip 10–15% in restaurants

  • WhatsApp is widely used

  • Travel insurance is recommended
